Members of the L.I. Smith team have completed a total of over 300,000 hours without an accident. As a result of our performance record, the Tennessee Road Builders Association presented L.I. Smith & Associates a safety award for its outstanding performance for the past five consecutive years.
L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. has on staff a qualified Health and Safety officer whose responsibility includes establishing procedures to protect the health and safety of L.I. Smith workers on each of our project sites. To accomplish this, L.I. Smith provides online as well as in-house training for HAZWOPER safety training certification.
All employees are required to complete 12 hours a year, with an additional 8 hours a year to maintain certification. L.I. Smith & Associates currently has 12 individuals within our Survey and GIS division that are HAZWOPER certified. The majority of our team is certified in First Aid as well as CPR.

Smith & Associates includes: Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Awareness, Confined Space Entry, Decontamination, Emergency Procedures, Hazard Recognition, Medical Surveillance, OSHA Regulations, Personal Protective Equipment, Radiological Hazards, Respiratory Protection, Site Control, Site Characterization, Toxicology, Air Monitoring, Slips Trips Falls, Work Place Violence, Heat Stress, Cold Stress, and Fire Safety.

Fort McClellan Development, Army BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) Project
Anniston-Calhoun County, Alabama
As a sub-consultant to Matrix Environmental Services, L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. has been providing services to the McClellan Development Authority for On-Call Professional Land Surveying Services during the redevelopment of the former Fort McClellan, located in Anniston, Alabama. Work has been awarded on a task order basis. The original base period of the contract was for one (1) year with the option to renew yearly for up to a total of five (5) years. The original contract was renewed each year for the duration of the agreement. In 2012 the McClellan Development Authority re-selected L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. for a Master Service Agreement for Professional Land Surveying Services to last through the remainder of the redevelopment efforts. This was a qualifications based selection and L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. was ranked at the top of the list of qualified submitters.
Professional land survey services being provided at McClellan are in conjunction with an on-going environment investigation, remediation, and/or redevelopment activities at various parcels throughout McClellan.
Land survey services provided by L.I. Smith & Associates include but have not been limited to, construction quality assurance surveys, boundary surveys, legal property surveys and development of legal descriptions, internal grid point surveys, and survey team oversight. L.I. Smith has furnished all management, supervision, labor, vehicles, tools, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete the tasks outlined in each task order. Task orders have been issued and completed to providing boundary surveys, internal grid surveys, and internal boundary marking for the following areas: MRS-2, MRS-3, MRS-4, MRS-6, MRS-7, MRS-8, MRS-11, MRS-12, MRS-13 and Northern Alpha.
L.I. Smith implements project specific safety tail-gate meetings prior to each work day and QA/QC measures after the completion of survey field activities to ensure accurate work. All data is compiled into a geodatabase and reviewed in a GIS environment. All data is managed through the GIS and electronic files are delivered in a geodatabase format in addition to hardcopies. Currently the GIS for the project has included over 12,835 surveyed data points, as well as polygonal boundaries covering thousands of acres.
Gleason Plant, Site Topographical and Structural Survey
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Gleason, Tennessee
L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. was subcontracted by URS Energy & Construction, Inc. to conduct surveying and topographic mapping activities in order to generate plan drawings, which accurately showed the location and elevation for all existing and above ground features for the area of the proposed addition and upgrade of the plant's simple cycle units to combine cycle units.
L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. provided all items of labor, material, and the equipment necessary to establish survey control base line and elevations from existing benchmarks. Horizontal and vertical ground control surveys were performed, including establishment of semi-permanent survey markers, and benchmarks with monumentation.
Mechanical Surveys were provided for the location and elevations of three separate gas turbine units that included particular points specified by the contractor to survey the gas turbine stacks, as well as the top, center, and bottom flange of the units.
A boundary survey was provided for the wooded wetlands with buffer zone and contours. LIS&A identified all existing utility features on the ground surface on the plan drawings and surveyed invert elevations and material of the underground pipes, manholes and inlets, as well as located any electrical, utilities, or conduits.
Topographic Data was accurately plotted with existing contour lines and spot elevations. Existing contours were shown at 1 foot intervals, while spot elevations were taken at a maximum of 50 feet spacing. The undeveloped area grade measurements were taken within 0.1 foot accuracy. Existing permanent features in the plant areas were within 0.01 foot accuracy. LIS&A furnished and installed one survey control monument.
L.I. Smith & Associates provided the contractor with field survey notes, sketches and drawings showing the results of all the field survey work and a final plan sheet drawing with all the features in accordance with the contract schedule requirements. The deliverables included hard copies of the plan sheet drawings as well as the electronic files in Microstation format.
John Sevier Fossil Plant, Rogersville, Tennessee
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. was subcontracted by URS Energy & Construction, Inc. to provide data for the planning and upgrading of an existing Haul Road and for an addition to the existing power plant for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
The project consisted of merging existing planimetric and topographic files provided by TVA with new field survey data. The new survey data was for the location of culverts and catch basins including the inverts, fire hydrants, railroads, heights of transmission towers and poles along with the electric wire height, and ground elevations. The existing contours were updated using the merged files and the new field survey information.
The existing files had been created by TVA from various sources that included field surveys, photogrammetric mapping, LiDAR and digital orthophotos. The existing files were on different horizontal datums requiring the files to be shifted to a "Plant Grid" after they were merged.
Specific areas were outlined and broken out for use by the client. All areas designated by the client were plotted at 1"=40' map scale.
All L.I. Smith personnel were required to complete a safety course and pass required testing prior to working on-site.
