L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. (LIS) is seeking an entry level Civil Engineer to join our Paris office. 

The Civil Engineer will work closely with a Professional Engineer to plan and design a variety of land development projects with major tasks such as stormwater management, environmental permitting, and utility design. Projects and tasks will involve the use of various software programs including Civil3D, AutoCAD, Trimble Business Center, and Microsoft Office applications.   

 An ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and will thrive in a team-focused environment.  

Responsibilities:

  • Computer-aided design and drafting of site layout, drainage, roadway, grading, and utility systems using software programs such as AutoCAD and Civil3D  
  • Perform independent design tasks and organize drawings while receiving supervision  
  • Review designs, write reports, and complete calculations to assists in producing final designs  
  • Meet project schedule requirements and deadlines  
  • Perform site visits and prepare associated field reports  
  • Coordinate with clients, subcontractors, and workforce to resolve project challenges and conflicts  


Qualifications:

  • Desire to grow professionally  
  • 3-5+ years of Engineering experience 
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • The ability to collaborate and be a team player.  
  • Critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail, the ability to prioritize and plan ahead 
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

  • E.I.T. or P.E. certification

Civil CAD Designer

We are currently seeking an entry to mid-level Civil CAD Designer to join our Paris office. The ideal candidate will have experience in site/civil design and grading, stormwater management, environmental permitting, and utility design. 

The Civil CAD Designer will be responsible for producing quality designs and plans for a variety of land development projects, as well as implementing and managing AutoCAD drafting and plan preparation standards. This individual will work directly with Project Managers and Civil Engineers to ensure timely project completion within allocated budgets. 

Compensation:

$19 – $25 per hour

Responsibilities:

  • Computer-aided design and drafting of site layout, drainage, roadway, grading, and utility systems using software programs such as AutoCAD and Civil3D 
  • Perform independent design tasks and organize drawings under the supervision of professional engineers 
  • Review designs, write reports, and complete calculations to assists in producing final designs 
  • Perform routine drawing assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures. 
  • Work within allocated quality/budget/schedule expectations to complete scope-specific assignments 
  • Perform administrative duties associated with project management for civil/site projects.

  • Associate or technical school degree in design or drafting
  • 3+ years of drafting experience
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civl 3D
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Professional Land Surveyor (RLS)

Professional Land Surveyor (RLS)

L.I. Smith & Associates, Inc. (LIS) is seeking a motivated, experienced Professional Land Surveyor to join our Paris or Nashville office.

The Professional Land Surveyor will work closely with crew chiefs and their teams on a wide variety of projects. This position requires proficiency with the use of Carlson Survey software. Responsibilities include preparing accurate drawings, maps, charts, and other survey deliverables on schedule with minimal supervision.

The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of related civil engineering work.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, direct, and assist in leading team members in the completion of Boundary and Topographical Surveys, Route Surveys, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, Utility Surveys, and Constructional layout for public and private entities
  • Draft, design, and layout surveys in Carlson Survey software
  • Read and interpret deeds, plats, plans, and specifications
  • Perform record research including legal records, survey records, and land titles
  • Review and approve all survey field data and drawings to ensure they meet the state-specific minimum technical standards
  • Assist Survey Manager in developing and growing client base
  • Meet project schedule requirements and deadlines
  • Coordinate with clients and workforce to resolve project challenges and conflicts

Requirements:

  • License: Tennessee Professional Land Surveyor (RLS)
  • Working knowledge of Carlson Survey software applications
  • Skilled in the use of surveying instruments and software including Trimble Robotic and GNSS equipment
  • 2- 3 years of experience as LSIT
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record
  • Critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail, the ability to prioritize and plan ahead
  • Must be physically able to work outdoors in all terrain and weather conditions/lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 8-10 years of professional surveying experience

Job Description:

As a Civil Engineering Intern, you will assist with various engineering projects in a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to land development projects with major tasks such as stormwater management, environmental permitting, and utility design. Interns will also perform general clerical duties as assigned.

Compensation:

$15 per hour and/or school internship credit.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing, editing, and labeling project designs in Civil3D and/or AutoCAD
  • Create or modify project plans and specifications
  • Perform standard computations and analysis and research assignments
  • Support preparation of final design plans, cost estimates, and special provisions
  • Develop technical skills through challenging project assignments
  • Assist with maintaining records, preparing reports, and other functions as required

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering program at an accredited college or university
  • Preferred GPA of at least 3.0
  • Completed 1+ year(s) of Civil Engineering courses

Land Survey Intern

Land Survey Intern

L.I. Smith & Associates (LIS) is currently accepting applications for a Land Survey Intern. The internship is available for Summer 2024 at both our Paris and Nashville locations.

Job Description:

As a Land Survey Intern, you will spend the majority of your time working on survey crews with an experienced Party Chief. This position will require working outdoors, so you must be physically able to navigate rugged landscapes. Interns will also spend time in the office performing general design and clerical survey duties and will gain experience in AutoCAD drafting.

Compensation:

$ 15 per hour and/or school internship credit.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Party Chief with all aspects of the daily crew workload
  • Carry out a range of surveying assignments while learning the methods of work
  • Become familiar with survey equipment, data collection procedures, and various types of survey projects
  • Develop technical skills through challenging project assignments
  • Assist with maintaining records, preparing reports, and other functions as required

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Surveying or Survey related program at an accredited college or university 
  • Preferred GPA of at least 3.0
  • Completed 1+ year(s) of Surveying courses
  • AutoCAD drafting experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to withstand regular exposure to outdoor worksite weather conditions that may be wet and/or humid environments with extreme cold and/or heat
  • Must be able to perform tasks that require long-term standing and/or repetitive motions
